We did our own roof replacement.

BEFORE

The front of the house is under a magnificent, old oak tree that causes moss. The back of the house had some broken shingles but wasn’t a huge disaster. These pictures were taken one and a half years after we moved in. The previous owners said the roof was only 5 years old, which may be, but it seemed to have been done with a low-quality product. So we decided to make it a top priority to replace it.

DURING

I know a lot of people say we’re crazy and that it’s too much work, and you’re probably correct. It was back-breaking work and we’re probably crazy to tackle it, but we are extremely lucky to know how to do it properly and have three generations of men that are never hesitant to help. Bob’s family is truly heaven sent and we are eternally grateful for them.

AFTER

We chose to use architectural shingles that have a longer life span, metal pipe boots, and quality drip edge, all from a local small business. We also installed zinc strips on the front of the house to prevent moss from growing again. We might have purchased everything cheaper at a big box store like Home Depot or Lowe’s but, especially during the Coronavirus Pandemic, we chose to support small businesses. As our neighbors were admiring our work, one of them mentioned that she paid $10,000 to have her roof professionally done two years prior.
